Three Very Important Traits:

  • Engaged and Active Listener,

  • Advocate for Others,

  • Problem solver

If these sound like you, consider a profession as a social worker.

Social workers help people in all situations of need. Careers in social work can be found in schools, communities, healthcare, criminal justice, and in advocacy organizations. Central to all of these is the willingness and desire to help those in need. Social workers may provide counseling, assist in identifying resources, and so much more. There is a nationwide shortage of social workers.

On average social workers work 40 hours per week, although may work more. There are a few general steps to having a career in social work.

Step 1: Obtain Undergraduate degree

Step 2: Complete supervised hours in the field

Optional Step 3: Obtain Masters and/or Doctorate degree in social work (independent practice and specialization require additional training)

Step 4: Take appropriate certification t exam

Step 5: Apply and earn state credentials

An undergraduate degree in social work is needed. For those seeking to practice independently a masters degree is required. The highest degree one can earn in social work is a doctorate.
